The Chair That Holds the Whole Stay

inga

There is always a chair.
Not placed for comfort.
Placed, it seems,
for your half-unpacked life.
A shirt over the back.
Trousers folded badly.
A book face down.
Receipt, charger, room key.
the day after,
the chair is carrying more of you
than the wardrobe does.
It becomes the middle ground
between leaving and staying—
a small, silent arrangement
of things you will need again
in the morning.
