The bathroom light at midnight

ron lach

Half asleep,
I reach for the switch
in the bathroom.

At once,
a hard white light comes on.

It feels like a light
meant more for morning
than for midnight.

Everything around me
brightens immediately.

All at once,
everything becomes clear
and exact.

Beyond it,
the rest of the room stays dim,
held in a kind of silence.
But here,
nothing is softened.

I stand before the mirror,
not fully awake.
For a moment,
I feel trapped
inside this clean, glaring light,
as if I were standing
in a place
that was never meant
to feel gentle at night.
